Information for students from College or University

We always aim to achieve the best outcome for our customers and have compiled this guide for students to help you achieve the best results for your finished thesis or dissertation. Allowing sufficient planning time will no doubt achieve better results. We can advise you on the right choice of paper before you print your thesis. For example, the correct grain direction (along the spine) will make the book more durable and a good quality paper will make it look more professional. We appreciate that the creation of your thesis or dissertation is a huge task, so we will make the most of whatever you are able to supply.

Your university’s requirements: These must not be ignored, as it could result in your thesis/dissertation being rejected by the university. Generally, the requirements are quite straightforward and may include page margins, binding style, colour of book-cloth, style of foil-blocking, etc. Please note it is your responsibility to request the correct binding according to your university’s current regulations.

Printing: If you would like us to print your thesis/dissertation, then the best file format to supply is PDF. Please ensure that you set the correct paper size (A4) and margins before forwarding to us. Some universities specify the margins, but we recommend a minimum of 30mm on the left (spine), 20mm on the top, 20mm on the right and 20mm on the bottom. Should you only be able to supply this in MS Word, then we will convert it to PDF free of charge, but you will need to proof-read it before it goes to print to ensure there has been no corruption (sometimes formatting, special fonts and characters do not convert correctly, so it is best for you to PDF it yourself if possible). Please also specify if you would like the printing single-sided or double-sided. Finally, if you want your thesis printed in black then please supply the artwork in black only – otherwise you may be charged extra for colour pages, as we are using modern digital presses which are automated.

Binding: We are happy for students to supply the printed pages. Please note that it is your responsibility to supply the loose pages in the right order. We will draw up a specification sheet before we proceed and ask you to approve it before production.

Please don’t panic though… we are here to help! Please make an appointment with us to discuss your requirements.
